Billy's Biography

Mr. Cunningham joined Burns, Cunningham & Mackey, P.C. in 1991. He concentrates his practice in personal injury, wrongful death, nursing home abuse, business litigation, environmental matters, and insurance matters. He is licensed to practice in the state and federal courts of both Alabama and Mississippi, as well as the U.S. Court of Military Appeals (1975), U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit (1980), and the Supreme Court of the United States (1985). He also represents the 13th Judicial Circuit as a Bar Commissioner, serves on a State Bar Disciplinary Panel, and is a member of the Board of Directors for Legal Services Alabama. In addition, he is an "AV" rated lawyer by Martindale-Hubbell - the highest rating a lawyer can receive.

Mr. Cunningham is also board certified as Civil Trial Advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy, and is certified as an Alabama Mediator. In addition, he is affiliated with the following professional organizations: American Association for Justice, Nursing Home Litigation Group, Mobile Bar Association, Alabama Bar Association, Alabama Association for Justice, Mississippi Bar Association, and Mississippi Association for Justice.  He has served on numerous civic boards and organizations.

William Cunningham attended the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee. After being commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps he attended Cumberland School of Law in Birmingham, Alabama. After graduation in 1974, he returned to active duty for four years. He resigned his commission and was discharged in 1978. He returned to Mobile and joined the firm of Sintz, Pike, Campbell & Duke.   Mr. Cunningham's wife, Kathryn Northcutt Cunningham, is a retired internal medicine doctor. She now consults with the firm assisting in medical litigation matters.
