I was born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska - the cold, dark and difficult part of Alaska. I'm the youngest of six kids. We are a very tight family. My father was Ed Merdes. Dad was an incredible trial lawyer and we were partners until 1991. We started Merdes & Merdes, P.C. together in 1988. Mom was just all-around fantastic. She used to remind dad that he was "a distant second" in their high school class. Mom was first.
Opting to "play baseball" in 1980, I went to Southern California for my senior year of high school. Really, I just was sick of the dark/cold in Fairbanks, and had listened to too many Beach Boys songs... I then attended Santa Clara Univ. on a baseball scholarship, securing a Bachelors in Economic in 1985. I next went to Santa Clara’s School of Law in 1985, graduating cum laude in 1988 as the Editor-in-Chief of its Law Review. Cornell Univ. was my next stop - where I earned a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) in 1990.
Merdes & Merdes, P.C. focuses on personal injury, wrongful death and insurance litigation. We fight insurance companies and are Board Certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy (NBTA). I am a Director of the Alaska Academy of Trial Lawyers (AATL) and am also a Diplomate of the American Association of Justice. Frankly, this is just a bunch of snooty groups who pay attention to attorneys doing this type of work. We're proud to belong to these groups, but take them with a grain of salt.
