According to a news release by the CPSC, "An incorrectly sized differential was installed in the tractor transaxle affecting the engagement of the differential lock and causing the tractor to turn to the left when braking. This causes the vehicle to veer left when the brake is applied, posing a risk of collision and injury to the operator and bystanders."

To this date, there have been no reports of injuries associated with the recalled tractors.

View a list of model numbers and serial numbers included in the recall. The serial number plate is on the tractor frame above the front wheel.

Consumers should contact a John Deere dealer to schedule a free repair. In the meantime the tractors should not be used to avoid risk of injury.

Consumer Information: Contact Deere & Company at (800) 537-8233 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET or visit the company’s Web site at www.johndeere.com

Baby Pacifiers Recalled Over Choking Hazard

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled pacifiers after learning they could pose a potential choking hazard. Parts of the pacifier may come off and a child could choke or swallow them.

The pacifiers are painted with slogans like "my mom rocks", "rock star", and "mute button", among others. They were sold nationwide at baby boutiques, Nordstroms, and online at www.ItsMyBinkyDot.com, from February 2006 and June 2008. The recalled pacifiers have "Japlo" imprinted on the front of the pacifier shield at the bottom.

There have been no reported injuries from the pacifiers. The recall involves 115,000 pacifiers. If you own one you should take it away from your child and return it for a free replacement. You may contact the company at (888) 689-9444 for more information.
Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Shannon Weidemann

Colorado Springs Restaurants Have Tomatoes

Due to the recent tomato recall many restaurants pulled tomatoes from the menu as a precautionary measure. Tomatoes, from an unknown source, have been contaminated with a rare strain of salmonella. Hundreds of people have become ill from eating raw tomatoes.

The Ritz in downtown Colorado Springs never had to take Roma tomatoes off of its menu because its produce was considered safe. Bek says The Ritz gets its tomatoes from a local grower who uses safe, F.D.A. approved methods to water crops.

"We're really diligent about where we get our produce from and our meats and everything and we inspect everything and make sure that it's top quality before we even accept it."

The FDA has cleared tomatoes grown in several states and declared them safe. Tomatoes grown in Colorado are on the safe list. Chipotle, Subway, and the Pita Pit are all serving tomatoes again after switching to grower's from safe areas.

Salmonella causes a sickness that includes diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. There have been several hospitalizations from the outbreak.
Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Shannon Weidemann

Sweetened Ginger Recalled for Sulfites

Jars of sweetened ginger have been recalled due to the presence of undeclared sulfites. The product is distributed by Fine Land Corp. under the Golden Girl brand name. The recalled ginger is sold in a 7 ounce plastic container.

The recall was initiated after routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors and subsequent analysis by Food Laboratory personnel revealed the presence of undeclared sulfites in Golden Girl brand "Mut Gung" sweetened ginger which did not declare sulfites on the label. The consumption of 10 milligrams of sulfites per serving has been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic shock could occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon ingesting 10 milligrams or more of sulfites.

The recalled item was distributed to stores across the country. There have been reports of injuries. The company is offering a full refund to consumers that purchased the product. The company is also taking phone calls at 718-714-1850.

Canned Bean Recall Expanded to Vegetables

A recall of canned beans manufactured by a Michigan based company has been expanded for the second time. This time large cans of vegetables have been added to the recall list. The recalled canned vegetables come in 6 and 7 pound sizes and include beans, asparagus, and black-eyed peas. The cans may be contaminated with botulism.

No illnesses have been reported to the FDA, but the agency says consumers should remain alert and throw away recalled products marketed under brand names Classic Sysco, Code, Frosty Acres Restaurant's Pride Preferred, GFS, Kitchen Essentials, Monarch Heritage, Necco, New Era, Nugget and Reliance Sysco.

Processors other than New Era may be packing these brands, but only products packed by New Era are subject to the recall.

Botulism can cause a deadly illness if ingested or absorbed by the skin. Great care should be taken when disposing of the recalled items. The cans should not be opened and should be double bagged. Most of the cans were probably sold to restaurants and institutions but were available to the general public. A complete list of recalled items can be found here: www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopic.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Shannon Weidemann

Inspections of Toy Imports to Increase

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced that it will be doing more inspections of toys at the nation's ports. The CPSC is working to reduce the number of dangerous toys that have been entering the United States. Last year saw a large number of toys recalled due to lead content. Lead when ingested can cause developmental and neurological problems.

Under the new initiatives, CPSC will begin to place full-time staff at some of the nation's busiest ports, such as Seattle. CPSC is being given access to real-time information and data from Customs officials about shipments bound for the U.S. so that CPSC staff can help pinpoint high-risk products.

CPSC also plans to boost port inspection of toys, fireworks, electrical products and other goods considered potentially high-risk, and will conduct a study of specific imports to help determine safety compliance.

The CPSC has been lobbying for more funding and power from Congress to increase the number of employees working on product safety and what they are able to do. The agency has faced criticism over the number of toys that were brought into the country and sold in stores and then were recalled.

If you would like to read more about product safety, please visit InjuryBoard's Defective & Dangerous Products information page.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Shannon Weidemann
