A comment on Metal-on-Metal Hip Replacements Cancer Risk

I am just wondering about something....I had two metal on metal hip implants done on my right side,I had to have them both revised after they dislocated and moved,All this took place in a two and a half year period....right before my second revision(third surgery)I had to get checked out by a urologist because i had a large amount of blood in my urine...the doc thought it was cancer..thank god it wasn't...couldn't find the explanation...Could this be the reason??

A comment on Metal on Metal Hip Implant Lawsuits Include Biomet

Dec. 2011 I had a revision surgery due to metallosis from a Biomet Magnum hip. I had tissue necrosis in the hip compartment, which I thankfully had an awesome surgeon who took quick action. I was told there were no cases of metallosis with the Biomet Magnum anywhere in the world, I may have been the first reported. I filed suit immediately because I want people to know that this can happen to them. I was lucky it was caught early, but I faced emergency surgery right before Christmas, and the stress alone was enough to kill me! Please, if you have a Magnum hip, have your Dr. do a chromium/cobalt level testing before you have to go through what I did. I don't know what the future problems may be fromt he metallosis, I do know that since my hip was revised with another type of material, I feel so much better. I live in Maryland.

A comment on Reimbursing Your Insurance Company When You're The One Injured

Darren: Excellent post! The subrogation process is not limited to situations like the Depuy recalls. One of the important things lost in the phony "tort reform" debate is that successful lawsuits often result in the reimbursement of health insurance paid medical benefits. These lawsuits do not cost the health care system money; most of the time, they provide full or partial reimbursement for medical expenses, thus assisting in RECOUPING dollars lost in the health care system. So, those who express "shock" when a multi-million verdict is rendered should keep in mind that a substantial part of that verdict will go to reimburse carriers, physicians and hospitals for medical care. Thanks for posting about this important issue. Regards, Mark

A comment on FDA Recalls St. Jude’s Riata Lead Based on Risk of Death

My husband has the 1580 and he is 100% dependant on the pacemaker, and does have heart failure. We just recieved the letter notifing us of this recall. I called his doctor's office and they said to just continue to be home monitered and also they check it at the office. He said they would know there was aproblem before he would. Somehow this just doesn't make any sence. Now one of the problems he has is infection concerns as the 1st ICD became infected. So, there are a lot of concerns here. Why don't they do more studies on these prior to placing them in humans bodies?

A comment on Concerns Mount for Medtronic Infuse BMP-2

The FDA should be stepping in and pulling this product off the market. 85% of Bmp sales are off- label. The patients are unknowing victims and do not see the warnings on the labels. The physicians in many cases are being paid more from Medtronic than from there jobs. I have lived this and my life is altered forever.

A comment on Congress To Require Companies To Track Artificial Hips, Knees, Other Implants

The #1 expenditure of Medicare is joint replacements. Failed medical device "innovations" place patients and their families in medical and legal purgatory. An independent, transparent registry (similar to Consumer Reports for automobiles) would provide patients/clinicians with real-time information about safety/effectiveness. Legislation at the federal level must change the charter of the FDA to allow Patient Representatives to vote as stakeholders in medical device panels. Medical device companies must define the life of the product and warranty a portion. Congress can act to rescind the medical device industry entitlement given in 2/2009 by the Supreme Court "Riegel v Medtronic" with preemption from state court.
