The family of four people killed by a drunken off-duty police officer last August has filed a $200 million wrongful-death lawsuit against New York City. The suit alleges the city promoted a belief among police officers that they were protected from alcohol-related arrests and prosecutions. Also named as defendants were the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association and Joseph Gray, the officer involved in the accident.
Maria Herrera, 24, her 4-year-old son, and her 16-year-old sister died when Gray ran over the family as they crossed a Brooklyn street. Herrera, who was also pregnant at the time, gave birth after the accident but her son died hours later. Gray was recently found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to five to 15 years in prison.
