The family of an 8-year-old Maryland boy who died when he was crushed by an antique elevator has settled a wrongful death lawsuit for $3 million. In 2001, Tucker Smith became trapped between the doors of a moving elevator at the Bethel Inn in Maine. When a maid on another floor rang for the elevator, which was made before the 1950s and uses an outer door and a collapsible gate inside, Smith was crushed, dying instantly. Smith's parents, Jeffrey and Mary Smith of Bel Air, Maryland, filed suit against the elevator's maker, Otis Elevator Co., the Bethel Inn and Pine State Elevator, a Maine company that inspected the elevator shortly before the accident.
