AMO Complete MoisturePlus Multi-Purpose Solution Recalled
Updated July, 2007: Advanced Medical Optics Complete MoisturePlus Multi-Purpose Solution has been confirmed to have a “strong association” with an increased risk of a serious eye infection called Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK). The contact lens solution was recalled earlier this year because of this risk.
Doctors at the University of Illinois at Chicago noticed that there was a large increase in AK cases in contact lens users in 2003. There were 63 cases of AK from 2003 through 2006. This is a highly unusual number, given that most of the time there are only two or three cases a year.
The university decided to investigate and compared 30 AK cases with 39 participants who did not develop the infection from contact lenses. They found that 55.2% of the people with AK only used AMO Complete MoisturePlus Multi-Purpose Solution whereas only 10% of people from the control group exclusively used the contact lens solution. The results show that people who use this type of contact lens solution have a 16 time greater risk of developing the eye infection.
Surprisingly, nearly 39% of people with AK either did not use this specific type of lens solution or they used it in combination with another brand. This suggests that there are other risk factors in contracting AK, such as re-using the solution, rubbing the lenses when cleaning, and showering with contact lenses in.
