An Amtrak train traveling to Washington, D.C. from Chicago derailed this afternoon outside of Kensington, Maryland, about 10 miles north of the capital. Authorities at the scene say dozens of passengers were injured in the accident, six seriously. The train, carrying 190 passengers and 12 crewmembers, had 13 passenger cars--11 of which reportedly derailed.

Early accounts indicate that that there were no fatalities, although several passengers are reportedly still pinned inside the derailed cars. The Montgomery County Department of Fire and Rescue dispatched 85 workers to the area. Train officials say temperatures in the high 90s may have weakened the tracks, leading to the derailment.
