Over 3,000 Anniston, Alabama residents must wait for a jury to decide if they will receive compensation to clean up PCB contamination caused by a chemical company's factory. A class-action lawsuit filed by residents against Solutia Incorporated, a company that once manufactured PCBs for use in electrical insulation, went to trial last year. The suit alleges that Solutia, formerly Monsanto Co., knew that PCBs were toxic, yet lied to residents about the substances potential for harm.

Defense attorneys argued that the plaintiffs' health problems could not be blamed on any toxic chemicals that remain at the site. Solutia spent over $40 million during the past year cleaning the contaminated Anniston facility. The plaintiffs are also seeking reimbursement for their land's decrease in value.
