A Georgia jury awarded $13.4 million this week to the family of a woman murdered at an apartment complex in Norcross. On March 15, 1999, 20-year-old Danielle Jennings was strangled to death in her apartment by Calvin Oliver, a maintenance man working at the TGM Ashley Lakes Inc. facility. Jennings' family sued TGM as well as the complex's administrator and leasing manager, alleging the defendants failed to properly conduct a proper background check on Oliver before he was hired.

According to plaintiff attorneys, the complex's key policy was also flawed. Employees had access to residents' keys, and the lockbox that contained the keys to the complex's 240 apartments was often left unsecured. Oliver is currently serving a life sentence in prison.
