Boaters out for an afternoon of sun and fun on Indiana's White River experienced more than they bargained for when their
boat fell backward down a small waterfall. After going over the falls, the boat became stuck at a 45-degree angle for more than two hours.
The boat's passengers, four adults and one infant, were all rescued by the Indiana State Police and taken to a local hospital. No one was seriously injured. It appears that the boat drifted too close to the edge of the waterfall. Due to extensive rain in the area over the past few weeks, the current in the river was very swift. A spokesman for the Indianapolis Fire Department said all of the passengers were lucky to be alive.
Initially, the Fire Department attempted to rescue the boaters by extending a 100-foot ladder from the shoreline. The ladder proved 15 feet too short. The department then summoned the Indiana State Police who mustered a helicopter which successfully evacuated the boaters.
