An 80-year-old California grandmother won her lawsuit against the City of Burbank for her injuries arising from a fall on a city sidewalk. Gladys Dantagnon fell when she stepped in a dip in the sidewalk. She broke her right shoulder, a rib and her right middle finger and sued the city for $85,000, the majority of which was to cover medical expenses.

The lawsuit claimed that residents notified the city several times that the sidewalk was in a state of disrepair. The city initially offered Dantagnon $15,000 to settle the suit. She rejected that offer as inadequate to cover her approximately $57,000 in medical expenses. In the September, 2000 trial, a jury awarded Dantagnon over $500,000.

The city appealed, claiming that the residents were well aware of the depression in the sidewalk and that the city had already repaired the problem several times. In mediation, the verdict was reduced by 30% and Dantagnon's final award amounted to just over $350,000.
