The city of Miami recently settled a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of a 19-year-old man who was killed by police officers while unarmed in November 1995. Authorities with the Miami Police Department shot Derrick Wiltshire and an accomplice, Antonio Young, as they fled a robbery. Wiltshire jumped off an I-395 overpass in downtown Miami in an attempt to escape the officers but the police opened fire in a hail of bullets leaving the suspect dead.

According to attorneys representing the man's family, officers then planted a gun near Wiltshire's body to cover up the fact that he was unarmed. Plaintiff attorneys also referred to a report that showed the authorities initially told investigators they had shot Wiltshire in the front. An autopsy proved the man had been shot in the back. Two officers later confessed to the coverup.
