The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is launching an effort to locate recalled portable crib/play yards like the one that recently killed a nine-month-old baby. Baby Trend, Inc., of Ontario, California, recalled nearly 100,000 "Home and Roam" and "Baby Express" cribs/play yards in 1995 out of fears that the product could collapse and trap infants. In January 2001, a nine-month-old infant suffocated and died when her crib collapsed. Three other deaths are linked to the recalled products. CPSC experts advise anyone who has one of these portable cribs/play yards to stop using it immediately.
As an incentive to get consumers to look for the recalled cribs, Baby Trend is offering a new play yard to anyone who returns one of the recalled products. In addition, the company includes notices about the recall with shipments of its new products and in child advocacy newsletters.
The "Home and Roam" and "Baby Express" cribs/play yards sold nationally from 1992 to 1994 for between $60 and $130. CPSC safety experts warn that the cribs/play yards may appear properly assembled even though the top rails are not fully locked. If the top rails are not engaged, the V-shaped rails may close and trap a child.
