EPA Will Not Monitor Dioxin in Certain Sludge

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced last week that it will not monitor dioxin levels in sewage sludge that is incinerated or placed in landfills or containment ponds. An agency spokesperson reports that human health and the environment are "adequately protected" without additional monitoring. Studies have shown that exposure to dioxins may cause a number of adverse health effects, including cancer.
