The family of a 23-year-old man who died last year after contracting a rare but deadly bacterial infection from a tainted tissue transplant filed a lawsuit Friday against the tissue provider. On November 7, Brian Lykins, who had been in otherwise perfect health, was killed by the rare but deadly clostridium bacterium three days after undergoing elective knee surgery at St. Cloud Hospital in Minnesota.

The company that provided the tissue, CryoLife of Kennesaw, Georgia, has been named in several other lawsuits regarding graft infections. Investigators with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say 14 people have contracted infections from CryoLife tissue transplants. Lykins is the only known fatality.
