A New York jury awarded $10 million Wednesday to the family of a 14-year-old boy who died during a school field trip to a water park in Pennsylvania. Daniel Maracallo drowned in the wave pool at Allentown's Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom. Park security guards found the teenager in the attraction hours after fellow students reported him missing. Friends who saw Maracallo pulled under the water reportedly informed lifeguards, but their pleas were ignored.

Plaintiff attorneys argued that the students should never have gone to the amusement park because it had no educational value. The New York City Board of Education was ordered to pay $5.9 million, with Dorney Park responsible for the rest.
