The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cited pharmaceutical maker Pharmacia for improper safety procedures at a drug-manufacturing plant in Puerto Rico. According to a FDA letter sent to Pharmacia officials, during a September 2002 inspection of the facility, investigators discovered employees inadequately monitoring for impurities during the production of the anabolic steroid Winstrol, the malaria, lupus and arthritis drug Plaquenil and the contrast agent Omnipaque. A spokesperson for Pharmacia said the company was preparing to respond to the FDA complaints.
