Red Eyes
They make your eyes jump right into the Halloween season with a red iris or an eye-of-the-tiger look.
But the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers that unapproved decorative contact lenses have the potential to harm your eyes.
Just like corrective contact lenses, decorative lenses, sometimes called zero-powered or non-corrective lenses are regulated by the FDA.
It is illegal to market decorative lenses over-the-counter, yet consumers are able to buy them on the Internet, from video stores, flea markets, convenience stores, and beauty salons.
“Unauthorized contact lenses of all types present risks to the eye that include corneal ulcers, corneal abrasion, vision impairment, and blindness” the agency says in a news release.
Instead, the FDA recommends you get a valid prescription and buy a lens from an eye care professional, then clean and disinfect the lens as you would a corrective lens. #
