A Miami jury recently awarded $6 million to an elderly Florida man who was the victim of road rage. Eighteen-year-old Jason Matthew Helms punched Israel Cabezas, 77, on February 1, 1999, after his pick-up truck struck Cabezas' Mazda Sedan outside of Homestead. Cabezas suffered a broken cheekbone as well as severe brain damage after his head struck the paved road when he fell from the punch.

Cabezas' guardian and his wife filed suit against the teenager, alleging the assault was a negligent action. Helms claimed he was in a gang-infested area and was intending to punch a third person in self-defense when he accidentally struck Cabezas who was walking up behind him.
