Anniston, Alabama residents received some much-needed assistance last week when Governor Don Siegelman filed suit against the Federal government in an effort to delay the opening of a chemical weapons incinerator. Governor Siegelman claims the government broke its pledge to spend over $40 million on safety equipment, including gas masks and protective suits, for Anniston residents. Officials now suggest residents seal their rooms with plastic sheeting if an accident occurs.

The $1 billion incinerator, located at the Anniston Army Depot, is scheduled to destroy over 2,000 tons of chemical munitions dating back to World War II. The process will take nearly four years.

Over 70,000 people live within ten miles of the incinerator. Siegelman says he will fight the opening of the facility until "maximum protection" is provided to Anniston residents.
