New York state health department officials are investigating forty-one liver transplants that took place at Mount Sinai Hospital over the last two years. According to a spokesperson with the department, thirty-two of the operations resulted in deaths. The investigation was prompted by the January 2002 death of Mike Hurewitz, 57. Hurewitz passed away three days after donating part of his liver to his ailing brother. Inadequate staffing and improper post-surgical care at the hospital were blamed. As a result, the Health Department fined Mount Sinai $48,000 and suspended its live-patient partial liver donations for six months.
