Holland America Line announced Tuesday that it has canceled the next sailing of the cruise liner Amsterdam, only days after a lawsuit was filed by dozens of passengers who contracted a Norwalk-like virus during their Caribbean cruise earlier this month. The Amsterdam, which is scheduled to return Thursday from its latest voyage, will be taken out of service for 10 days until the cruise line completes a full disinfection.

Since October 1, when the ship left Vancouver on a 20-day cruise that went through the Panama Canal on its way to Fort Lauderdale, more than 500 passengers have fallen ill aboard the Amsterdam. Spread through food and water as well as human touch, the virus causes vomiting, diarrhea, headache, fever and abdominal cramps.

This is the second time in four months that Holland America has been forced to pull one of its ships from service because of a Norwalk-like virus. In July, dozens of passengers aboard the Ryndam, including one man who eventually died, became ill with a similar virus while on a cruise to Alaska.
