I35W Bridge Collapses in Minneapolis, Few Dead and Many Missing

Updated August 2007:

The I35W eight-lane highway bridge collapsed Wednesday, August 1, during rush hour traffic in Minneapolis. The bridge had been receiving repairs. Dozens of cars that were on the bridge fell more than 60 feet into the Mississippi River along with all the debris and concrete.

The bridge was at full capacity when the accident occurred, which may have contributed to the collapse. The bridge was built over 40 years ago and had received a “structurally deficient” rating. Two lanes in both directions were closed for construction when the bridge collapsed.

So far, authorities have reported that 4 people have died, but they think that they will find more deceased. A total of 79 people were injured from the accident, and there are at least 30 people that are still missing.

Many of the vehicles that fell into the water are obstructed by large concrete blocks, and getting all the vehicles out of the water is expected to take several days. Police Chief Tim Dolan stated, “The bridge is still shifting. We’re dealing with the Mississippi River. We’re dealing with currents. We’re going to have to do it slowly and safely.”

Families of those missing gathered in a hotel ballroom awaiting news of their family members’ whereabouts and health. Governor Tim Pawlenty has ordered an immediate inspection on all the bridges that have the same design as the bridge that collapsed.
