A man who developed a speech impairment and severe numbness after a medical procedure at an Illinois hospital recently settled a malpractice lawsuit for $19.4 million. Paul Wyatt developed a subdural hematoma after being mugged and beaten in a San Antonio, Texas hotel parking lot. During surgery, days later in Chicago, neurosurgeons at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center decompressed the hematoma, which led to hemorrhaging and Wyatt's irreversible numbness. The settlement is a Cook County record for a plaintiff suffering from the same condition.
