Dozens of protestors representing several public interest groups were joined by supporting members of Congress and concerned citizens at a rally on Capitol Hill yesterday to oppose the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear dump. In February, the Department of Energy recommended that over 77,000 tons of nuclear waste be dumped at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, located eighty miles northwest of Las Vegas.

Nevada Governor Kenny Guinn vetoed the plan last week, but Congress can still override Guinn's Notice of Disapproval with a majority vote in both houses. Government watchdog organizations such as Public Citizen and the Sierra Club say the plan is unjustified. Under the proposal, trucks or trains would transport the radioactive waste through forty-four states.
