Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reported yesterday that faulty maintenance conducted by CSX Transportation may have contributed to last month's Amtrak crash in Florida. A spokesperson for the NTSB said in the months before the accident, CSX, which owns and maintains the tracks just south of Crescent City, was having trouble keeping enough gravel beneath a stretch of track where the derailment took place. As a result, the tracks may have become misaligned, which the engineer of the train reported seeing. The NTSB, though, says it is too early in the investigation to officially report a cause of the accident. Four people were killed and close to 160 others were injured on April 18 when the Amtrak Auto Train derailed.
