A Florida teenager who was wrongly accused of murder by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office two years ago settled a civil rights lawsuit with the city yesterday for $775,000. Officers arrested Brenton Butler, 17, in May 2000 and charged him in the robbery and murder of Georgia tourist Mary Ann Stephens. Butler, an African-American, insisted the police, including Sheriff Nat Glover's son, beat and intimidated him into making a false confession. He spent six months in jail before a jury acquitted him on all charges. The lawsuit alleged officers were inadequately trained and guilty of racial profiling. Butler's story was recently the subject of an HBO documentary.
