GlaxoSmithKline, the maker of anti-depressant Paxil, is facing a class action lawsuit filed by thirty-five people claiming the drug caused "severe withdrawal reactions." The complaint filed in California Superior Court alleges that Paxil causes greater physical dependency and addiction than other similar drugs. Paxil is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, an SSRI, similar to Zoloft and Prozac.

The complaint alleges that GlaxoSmithKline was well aware of Paxil's tendency to cause severe withdrawal complications once patients stop taking the medication. Paxil debuted in the United States in December of 1992. A GlaxoSmithKline spokesperson declined to comment on the current suit.
