According to two doctors from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, seven patients who took Lipokinetix, a dietary supplement for weight loss, have developed severe liver injuries. Drs. James D. Lewis and Brian L. Strom report in the April 16 Annals of Internal Medicine that the patients developed negative symptoms after using the drug for four to twelve weeks.

In November 2001, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned consumers to immediately stop use of Lipokinetix because of its association with liver injury and liver failure. Three of the seven patients were hospitalized after developing hepatitis.
