As part of the largest recall in the history of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Wampler Foods recalled 27.4 million pounds of poultry Sunday because the company's deli products may be contaminated with listeria. The announcement came just four days after the company recalled 295,000 pounds of turkey and chicken products produced at Wampler's Franconia, Pennsylvania plant because
listeria was detected in a turkey product package.
Wampler, a unit of Pilgrim's Pride Corporation, expanded the recall to include all cooked deli products made at the plant from May 1 to October 11 after listeria was detected in the facility's floor drains. Officials with the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service discovered the bacterium at the plant while investigating a recent outbreak in the Northeast that has killed seven people. The listeria strain detected in Wampler's products is believed to be different from the strain that is causing the outbreak.
