An effort to reform our bulging medical costs might take a look at the salaries of some in medicine and in medical academia.
A list published by the Chronicle of Higher Education finds three of the top four highest paid are doctors working for colleges. Three-quarters of the top paid were M.D.s with much of that money coming for medical centers and academic comes from federal research dollars and reimbursements, reports the Wall Street Journal.
Top of the list - David N. Silvers, a Columbia University dermatologist who makes more than $4,000,000.
Michael M.E. Johns, a vice president for health affairs at Emory University at more than $3,753,000.
Arthur Rubenstein, is the vice president and the dean of the school of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, whose salary is reported to be over $1.8 million a year. His total compensation of $3.3 million comes from a pension distribution.
The Chronicle of Higher learning, a trade publication, looked at 600 private colleges and found that the presidents only accounted for about 11 percent of the million dollar plus earners.
The top earner the study found was Pete Carroll, head football coach at USC with a $4.4 million paycheck, more than four times the annual compensation for the university president.
Sen. Charles Grassley, (R-Iowa), the ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, has called on colleges to be more forthcoming about their financial information.
The IRS has called on more than 400 colleges to give detailed financial information to see if they are in compliance with their tax-exempt status. #
