A Missouri jury awarded $2.2 billion Thursday to a victim of Kansas City pharmacist Robert Courtney, who pled guilty to twenty Federal counts of drug tampering in February. Georgia Hayes brought the first of 400 lawsuits against Courtney after he admitted to diluting cancer medications for several years to earn a profit. Although Hayes will not likely collect much of the award (Courtney's assets, estimated at $12 million, have been seized by the government), she stated, "justice has been done."

Physicians testified during the trial that Hayes' chances of recovering from ovarian cancer were seriously hampered by the diluted medications. Courtney admitted to diluting more than 70 drugs, affecting 4,000 patients and 98,000 prescriptions.
