The mother of a 2-year-old girl who died last August in Florida when she was accidentally left alone in a day-care center van has reached a settlement with the facility's insurance carrier. Guideone Insurance Co., which handles policies for the Abundant Life Academy of Learning, will pay Tekela Harris-Carter $1.5 million as part of the settlement agreement.

Harris-Carter's daughter, Zaniyah Hinson, was locked in the day care center's van after a field trip. The temperature inside the Chevrolet Astro reached 125 degrees. Employees failed to properly count the children or use a checklist upon their return to the center. The Academy of Learning and Gail Besemer, the teacher who drove the van, have been charged with child neglect.
