A Florida jury recently awarded $2 million to the family of a woman who died due to improper treatment at a nursing home. Sadie McIntosh, 80, was admitted to Pompano Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in 1999 to recover from hip replacement surgery. During her stay, a nursing aide accidentally cut into her surgical incision while replacing a bedpan, spilling urine and stool into her wound. The nurse reportedly left McIntosh without cleaning the incision. The wound became infected and McIntosh was forced to undergo two additional surgeries. She died nearly three months later. The family sued Pompano Rehabilitation's parent company, Persana Care of Pompano West, Inc., alleging it was responsible for McIntosh's death.
