Those living in areas surrounding the World Trade Center disaster site are worried about the potential long term effects of exposure to dangerous materials released when the towers collapsed. Of main concern are materials such as asbestos and fiberglass.
Following September 11th, health officials detected asbestos levels above federal limits in some areas surrounding "ground zero." Residents are also concerned about lingering smoke and other chemicals in the air.
Health experts say that the smoke, while irritating, does not currently pose a serious health risk. Additionally, experts don't believe the local community is at risk of developing any diseases associated with other materials in the air. However, many residents plan to stay out of lower Manhattan because of health concerns.
Those working closest to the disaster site are taking appropriate precautions to prevent health problems. All recovery workers now use respirators. In addition, the rubble is sprayed to eliminate dust.
