A Pennsylvania jury awarded a mentally retarded 7-year-old boy $24 million this week in a medical malpractice case. Sheila Dunkle, who filed the lawsuit on her son Austin's behalf, alleged doctors at Sacred Heart Hospital in Allentown failed to properly resuscitate her child after he was born prematurely in September 1994. The lawsuit also claimed the medical facility was understaffed at the time of the child's birth, which contributed to the boy's permanent brain damage. Sacred Heart plans to appeal the decision.
