Federal and State environmental agencies are suing a phosphate company whose spill of highly acidic water into the Alafia River in 1997 killed most of the river's aquatic life. The company has not yet established a cleanup plan. An accident at the Mulberry Phosphate plant sent about 50 million gallons of acidic water into the river and, eventually, out to into Tampa Bay. The lawsuit was filed to pressure Mulberry Phosphate to develop a remediation plan even though the company is currently in bankruptcy.
