King Day celebrations in Dade County, Florida ended on a sour note Monday night as a police officer shot and killed a man who was driving a stolen car. The shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m. during Dade County's Martin Luther King Festival. Witnesses to the shooting were critical of the police. One bystander reported that as authorities swarmed the 1999 Lincoln Continental, an officer jumped onto the hood and fired through the windshield, immediately killing the suspect. A Miami-Dade police spokesperson claimed the driver intentionally struck the officer with the stolen vehicle while attempting to escape from police. Onlookers allege officers did not give the suspect enough warning before opening fire. Witnesses say the streets were so congested with festival traffic, that it would have been impossible for the man to flee the area by car.
