An eleven-year-old girl who suffered permanent brain damage and partial blindness after neurosurgery at Miami Children's Hospital in 1996 won a $12.7 million verdict from a Florida jury last week. The girl underwent surgery to cure epileptic seizures. Attorneys argued that inadequate post-operative care led to permanent neurological damage. Some 24 to 36 hours after the procedure, the girl developed significant brain swelling, which nurses and residents failed to address.
