Safety 1st, the largest producer of baby bath seats, has revamped its bath seat design after Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Chairwoman Ann Brown challenged the company to assemble a safer bath aid for infants. The new concept is designed to limit the number of newborn fatalities associated with baby bath seats.

The new model has an arm support that hooks onto the edge of the bathtub, decreasing the chance of the seat overturning. Several infants have reportedly drowned after their bath seat tipped over into the water. Safety 1st has also made the leg openings smaller, limiting the chance of a baby sliding out of the seat. The final design, expected to be on the market within a year, will be slightly more expensive than the previous model.

According to the CPSC, more than nine deaths are associated with child bath seats each year.
