Today the FDA notified healthcare professionals that Plavix, (clopidogrel bisulfate) is less effective in preventing blood clots in some patients than others and it will try and determine whether the differences are due to genetic factors or mixing Plavix with other drugs. The news comes after studies found that the blockbuster drug had mixed reviews on effectiveness.
Patients receiving Avastin for colon cancer, were 33 percent more likely to develop blood clots than those who did not receive the drug, researchers announced after reviewing 15 clinical trials involving nearly 8,000 patients with advanced cancer.
In yet another study, Fosamax is linked to the risk of developing atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart beat. But researchers conclude that the benefits of drugs in this class that fight the ravages of osteoporosis, outweigh the risks.
