When it comes to antidepressants – Zoloft and Lexapro are at the top of the treatment list of a dozen medications. Italian researchers studied the records of 25,000 patients, and reviewed 117 studies.  Patient advocates say don't give up hope of finding help.

Hoping to continue the success of its blockbuster antipsychotic drug, Zyprexa, Eli Lilly has suffered a setback in its request for FDA approval of a longer-lasting formulation. Zyprexa is mired in controversy about the side effects and allegations that Lilly withheld important safety information.

The controversial drug, Seroquel, will have additional application to treat depression in adults if the drug maker AstraZeneca receives approval from the FDA. Seroquel use has been linked to diabetes, and two serious complications known as Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome and Tardive Dyskinesia.

U.S. health regulators are requiring manufacturer's of twenty-one anti-seizure drugs to add a warning about increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (suicidality) to the products’ prescribing information and labeling.

Cardiac patients who are depressed are less likely to exercise, which increases their risk of a cardiac event such as a heart attack or stroke, a new study in The Journal of the American Medical Association suggests.

There are three family tragedies that help transcend party lines and led to the signing of the mental health parity bill. It requires insurance to cover mental health issues like other physical ailments.  Previously sufferers faced limited coverage and higher co-pays.

A new study finds one in four terminally ill patients in Oregon who elect physician-assisted suicide have clinical depression and may not be capable of making an informed, rational decision about ending their lives. Oregon became the first state to enact a law allowing for physician-assisted suicide in 1997.

Depression is three times more common following a heart attack than among the general population and routine screening for depression is now recommended by the American Heart Association. In a vicious cycle, the more depressed- the more likely another heart attack will follow.
