The Food and Drug Administration is cracking down on manufacturers of ointments that claim to relieve pain by containing ibuprofen. This is the latest in a series of tougher regulatory actions by the agency under new chief Margaret Hamburg.

An expert panel convened to advise the FDA on acetaminophen, voted today that  Johnson & Johnson's Tylenol be given in smaller doses and the Extra Strength Tylenol should be sold by prescription only to reduce the dangers of serious liver injury.

According to a study from Denmark, deaths from fever-related seizures in children are extremely rare. Parents should be reassured that death after febrile seizures, convulsions brought on by a fever in small children, can lead to a loss of consciousness and shakiness, but last a minute or two generally.

Even though Vioxx and Bextra have been taken off the market because of a link to stroke and heart attack, a post-withdrawl study confirms the Cox-2 inhibitors increased the risk for stroke among Vioxx users by 28 percent and among Bextra users 41 percent when compared to the control group.

A federal court of appeals overturned a previous ruling saying Arizona school officials violated the constitutional rights of a 13-year-old student by subjecting her to a strip search based on an unverified tip made by another student that she was passing out prescription strength ibuprofen pills. The ruling serves as a warning to other school systems about the constitutional rights of students.
