While the cause of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) remains a mystery, new data shows that infants sleeping in a room with circulating air from a ceiling fan, had a 72 percent reduction in deaths. It may help circulate carbon dioxide the infants exhale.

SIDS is still classified as a natural cause of death and is considered rare. Even when parents follow the recommendation to remove obstacles in a crib and put babies to sleep on their backs, it still occurs. The actual number of SIDS deaths may be underreported as it is often mislabeled as another cause of death.

While no one knows the cause of SIDS, new research points to a higher level of E. coli and staph bacteria found in infants who died of SIDS. The mysterious disease kills 2,500 U.S. babies a year.
