The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has issued new pregnancy weight guidelines for the first time since 1990. In that time, more research has been conducted to analyze the effects of weight gain in pregnancy - on both mother and baby.

Overeating is the primary cause of obesity in the U.S., finds this study. An increase in exercise among Americans over 30 years ago has actually offset what might be an even greater weight gain.  Reduce intake by about 500 calories a day for adults, 350 calories a day for children to offset weight gain.

Hydroxycut weight loss and energy products are off the market after an FDA warning linking them to liver damage and death.  The multi-millionaire founder, now facing a slew of lawsuits, at one point was making $350 million a year on his untested products.

United Airlines passengers who are wider than the arm rests, will have to purchase another seat or wait until a flight with open seats. It's a way to both capture additional revenue and to answer hundreds of comsumer complaints the airline says it has received about wide-bodied flyers.

Nature has its own way of fighting obesity - in the form of brown fat, which helps babies and small mammals stay warm.  A cold environment, just about shivering, will activate brown fat's calorie burning capability, but short of moving to Alaska, these three newly published studies shed light into a promising area of obesity research.

The results of a new study on childhood obesity shows an alarmingly high rate of American preschoolers are obese. Nearly one of every five children studied were considered obese, with the greatest percentage of obesity seen in American Indian children.

A new study in the journal Neurology suggests obesity, in particular, abdominal obesity, may be linked to a greater risk of developing restless leg syndrome, a neurological disorder that causes unpleasant sensations in the legs.

The FDA is issuing its third alert concerning over-the-counter weight loss products that contain prescription ingredients. A diuretic, anti-seizure, and prescription-only appetite supressant have been found in these OTC drugs the FDA wants taken off the market.

The FDA is expanding its warning about tainted weight loss products that contain undeclared, active pharmaceutical ingredients. In other words, the ingredients are not mentioned on the label and pose serious health risks including, heart attack, stroke and seizures.

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has an improved chance of surviving pancreatic cancer because it was caught early. The justice underwent surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering today. Her cancer was caught during a routine scan.

"Eat This and Not That," is a new book that teaches grocery store shoppers to make better choices by reading labels. Slight alterntions to the typical American diet with foods available in the grocery store, can translate to weight loss, the authors say.
