While the cause of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) remains a mystery, new data shows that infants sleeping in a room with circulating air from a ceiling fan, had a 72 percent reduction in deaths. It may help circulate carbon dioxide the infants exhale.

SIDS is still classified as a natural cause of death and is considered rare. Even when parents follow the recommendation to remove obstacles in a crib and put babies to sleep on their backs, it still occurs. The actual number of SIDS deaths may be underreported as it is often mislabeled as another cause of death.

SIDS still mysteriously kills about one of every 2,000 infants worldwide, but the latest research into this mystery is pointing to serotonin, the brain chemical that regulates body functions and mood. Mice genetically engineered with low levels of serotonin, experienced sudden death, not unlike SIDS.

Sleep apnea results in low blood oxygen levels, and now a study out of UCLA shows that it may lead to brain injury, and disrupted memory and thinking. The damage occurs in regions that help store memory and researchers can measure the impact.

The cause of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is still one of the great mysteries of medicine that kills thousands of babies a year.  A newly published study is offering a provocative new theory on the cause of SIDS. Dr. Daniel Ruben suggests SIDS babies experience an injury to their inner ears during birth caused by the high-pressure surge of blood from the placenta during delivery.
