The H1N1 swine flu virus may be responsible for unexplained seizures and flu-like symptoms in children reports the CDC who urges parents and doctors to treat symptoms with flu-fighting drugs and have respiratory specimens tested.

Children of mothers who took the anti-seizure medication valproate, had lower IQ scores as three-year-olds, researchers find. Valproate should not be the first line of epilepsy defense for any women of childbearing age they conclude.

The FDA is issuing its third alert concerning over-the-counter weight loss products that contain prescription ingredients. A diuretic, anti-seizure, and prescription-only appetite supressant have been found in these OTC drugs the FDA wants taken off the market.

Seizures can turn into a medical emergency if they are not addressed immediately.  Tuesday, the coroner in the Bahamas officially listed Jett Travolta's death as a "seizure."

The Travolta family had largely kept quiet about their teenage son's fight with seizure disorder. He had also suffered from Kawasaki disease, which affects 19 out of every 100,000 children.

According to a study from Denmark, deaths from fever-related seizures in children are extremely rare. Parents should be reassured that death after febrile seizures, convulsions brought on by a fever in small children, can lead to a loss of consciousness and shakiness, but last a minute or two generally.

A federal court of appeals overturned a previous ruling saying Arizona school officials violated the constitutional rights of a 13-year-old student by subjecting her to a strip search based on an unverified tip made by another student that she was passing out prescription strength ibuprofen pills. The ruling serves as a warning to other school systems about the constitutional rights of students.
