YouTube is the free video service where anyone with a handicam can shoot a video and post it for the entertainment of the online community.
But some teens in Lakeland, Florida, north of Tampa, took this to the next level.
Police released video this week showing the brutal beating of a 16-year- old girl so they could allegedly post the video on YouTube and MySpace. This was no joke.
Six girls and two boys have been arrested in the attack.
The girl sustained a concussion and an eye injury among other injuries and had to be hospitalized. That’s when the sheriff’s office learned about the motive for the attack and the video.
Sheriff Grady Judd says he’s never seen anything like this.
The victim 16-year-old Victoria Lindsay was staying at a friend’s home. When she arrived, all six girls were waiting for her and began shouting and pummeling Lindsay. Two others stood outside to keep watch.
In the background the girls could be heard encouraging Lindsay to fight back. Another girl held the camera steady for about a half-hour as she captured it all on video.
The video is very disturbing and parents should be cautioned about letting children see such raw violence.
At one point, Lindsay tried to leave, and Sheriff Grady Judd says about that portion of the tape, “There's only 17 seconds left. Make it good. That is animalistic behavior. It's pack mentality. They lured her there to beat her."
After the beating three of the teens forced Lindsay into a car and took her to another location where they let her go.
The teens ranging in age from 14 to 17 are charged with kidnapping and they all are facing charges of false imprisonment and battery. The two males, ages 16 and 18 are accused of being lookouts during the beating.
Lindsay’s father is furious with YouTube and MySpace. He tells Tampa Bay 10 “As far as I’m concerned MySpace is the anti-Christ for children.”
The motive for the attack the teens allege is that Lindsay criticized her friends on the social networking page. He mother says it was someone else. #
