Three more New York residents have reportedly died due to a string of Listeria infections caused by contaminated food, bringing the total number of fatalities in the state to five. Health officials in New England have yet to identify the source of the infections, but since a Listeria outbreak was discovered earlier this month in Pennsylvania, cases have been detected in Michigan, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. Four deaths have been reported in New Jersey and four more people have died in Pennsylvania. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating another related death in Michigan. Health officials say Pennsylvania reports about 24 cases of listeriosis a year, but the state health department has already seen 25 cases in the last two months.
